Legacies of all types are a vital part of any charities income. For some they provide a large percentage of their day to day expenses whilst for others they provide welcome injections of financial help to provide funding for improvements and additional resources.
Why legacy income is important to us
Legacies are very valuable to the Trust and in the last few years have provided the funds to enable us to redevelop the Pup and Special Needs area, improve insulation throughout the kennels and further improvements to provide the highest quality of care to our collie guests. Legacies also help us plan our future with confidence, especially with the uncertainty surrounding HS2 and its effect on the centre. In 2023 thanks to legacies we were able to purchase a field to offset the loss of land to HS2 and be able to walk our dogs.
Why put your affairs in order?
It's not always easy to think about making your Will but it is the only way you can be absolutely sure that your estate will pass to those you wish to benefit. By leaving clear and precise instructions about the disposal of your estate, you also save your loved ones from unnecessary distress at a time when they are least able to cope with it.
If you do not leave a valid Will
Your estate will be dealt with under the statutory intestacy rules. This means that your property and possessions may pass to people you did not wish to benefit, or even to the Crown. Whatever you may have said or thought about who you'd like to leave your estate to, the law will only recognise a valid Will. Also remember to make arrangements for your pets and ensure that everyone you know is aware of your wishes regarding them. The Trust will always assist any collie we have rehomed and this extends to anyone leaving a legacy to the Trust who leaves a collie that might need a safe refuge and rehoming.
How to go about making your Will
When you decide to make your Will, it is advisable to go to a solicitor for help. They will help you to leave clear and unambiguous instructions about your Estate, including any charity bequests you wish to make. It is extremely important that your will has the correct details of the charity and especially its Registered Charity number, in our case 1053585. This ensures there can be no confusion when dealing with your wishes.
